Species infomation

Distinctive features:

  1. Papillae between eyes.
  2. Dark blotch behind eye.
  3. Red iris.
  4. Males with a black head, body and front of dorsal fin.

Physical description:

One pair of nasal and orbital cirri. Lots of blunt papillae between eyes. Cirrus usually unbranched.

Colouration:

Dark head and front of body which fades into a light brown. White blotches on operculum, base of pectoral fin and along the midflank. First half of body with dark bars. Dark blotch behind the eye on the cheek. Iris is red. Front of head in the papillae region occasionally a lighter or orange colour.
Males: Dark head, body and front of dorsal fin.

Size:

Reaches 3.1 cm.

Habitat:

Found in worm tubes and holes in coral reefs and rocks.
