Distinctive features:

  1. Inverted '7' mark behind eye.
  2. Dark brown stripe along midflank composed of dark blotches.
  3. Males with a chainlink pattern on upper body.
  4. Males with white-bordered black ocellus at front of dorsal fin.

Physical description:

Very elongate body. No cirri.

Colouration:

Upper body and top of head dark brown with a pale brown belly. Black stripes leading to bottom of head. Multiple close dark blotches form a broken line along the midflank.
Males: pale chainlink-like pattern on upper midflank. Chin yellow. Front of dorsal fin with white-bordered black ocellus.

Size:

Reaches 13.0 cm.

Habitat:

Found in worm tubes around reefs and on sandy bottoms.
