Species infomation

Distinctive features:

  1. Males with white-ringed black dots on cheek and throat.
  2. Females red/brown.

Physical description:

Simple nasal and orbital cirri. Nasal cirri 2x length of eye diameter. Orbital cirri very short.

Colouration:

Body becomes translucent after head. Pelvic fins and edge of pectoral fin white.
Male: Orbital cirri dark. Blackish head with white-ringed black dots on cheek and throat. Black line along vertebral column with white dashes. 2 rows of black blotches, one on upper and the other on the lower body. Front of dorsal fin white and then black.
Females: body bright red to a ruddy brown. Lower head and lips translucent. Thick white stripe behind eye. Solid colour for the first fifth of the bodt. Wide white blotch immediately after head and another just before solid colour ends. Red/brown blotches along upper and lower body.

Size:

Reaches 1.8 cm.

Habitat:

Found in rocky shores

Notes:

Endemic to Cocos island.
