Species infomation

Distinctive features:

  1. Iris with blue bands.
  2. Males with purple-blue, sometimes reddish, orbital cirri.
  3. Males with heavy blue/white spotting.

Physical description:

Simple eye and nasa cirri.

Colouration:

Iris with blue bands. Body translucent after head. Vertebral column solid in colour with white/purplish dashes. Rows of black blotches along upper and lower body.
Males: colour highly variable; head and front of body can be light green, reddish, dark brown or black. Heavy white/blue spotting on head and front of body. Orbital cirri is often purple-blue but can be reddish. Base of orbital cirri with a blotch which matches colour of cirri. Front of dorsal fin pigmented like the body with heavy white/blue spotting.
Females: head and front of body green or a green-brown. Multiple white stripes originate from eye and reach bottom of head. May be white spotting on head and front of body. Front of dorsal fin (spines I-III) white with small black blotches on spines.

Size:

Reaches 2.5 cm.

Habitat:

Found in empty barnacles and tubes on rocks and rocky reefs.
