Distinctive features:

  1. Stripes behind eye on cheek.
  2. Black blotches along rear midflank.
  3. First 10 dorsal spines black.
  4. Black pelvic fins.
  5. Short orbital cirri.

Physical description:

Nasal cirri may have 2 branches. Orbital cirri short and unbranched.
Males: front of dorsal fin elevated with a skin flag on base of first dorsal fin.

Colouration:

Preserved fish: pale brown body. Front half of body and head with many dark spots. Faint stripes on cheek behind eye. Black dots on head. Black blotches along back half of the midflank which become smaller and more frequent posteriorly. First 10 dorsal spines black. Pelvic fins dark.

Size:

Reaches 4.4 cm.

Habitat:

Found on sandy bottoms with rubble.
