Species infomation

Distinctive features:

  1. Orbital cirri present.
  2. Females and immature males reddish.
  3. Breeding males with spiked dorsal fin and white-margined orange banner.

Physical description:

Simple nasal and orbital cirri.
Males: first dorsal spine elevated.
Females: first dorsal spine slightly elevated.

Colouration:

Females and juveniles: largely transparent with red vertebral column with white dashes. Red belly with white spots. Top of head green with blue cranial pattern. Dark variant exists, with a dark green head and vertebral column. Both morphs with white membrane at start of dorsal fin.
Breeding males: black head and front of body. Front of dorsal fin black with a thin orange banner with a lower white border.

Size:

Reaches 3.3 cm.

Habitat:

Found on corals and sponges. Breeding males found in holes.
