Species infomation

Distinctive features:

  1. Red-orange iris with blue-black stripes.
  2. Two small black dots immediately behind eye.
  3. 2 rows of blotches behind eye.
  4. ~9 bars along body.
  5. Females with ocellus at front of dorsal fin.

Physical description:

Very elongate body. No cirri.

Colouration:

Light brown to dark brown with a pale belly and throat. ~9 dark bars from top of body to midflank - can appear fainter in males. Orange-red iris striped with blue-black. 2 small black dots immediately behind eye. 2 rows of blotches on head, one from eye to opercle edge and the other just below Small brown dots on head. Blue-black branchiostegal membranes. Front of dorsal fin light brown.
Females: front of dorsal fin with bluish-black ocellus surrounded by a white ring.
Males: no ocellus on dorsal fin.

Size:

Reaches 11.0 cm.

Habitat:

Found in worm tubes and on bottoms with broken rubble near reefs.
