Distinctive features:

  1. Palm-like cirri.
  2. Dark blotch on cheek bordered by white-yellow.

Physical description:

Simple nasal cirri. Palm-like orbital cirri which is long with short branches on the side and long branches at the top.

Colouration:

Iris with light bands. Colour highly variable, from a yellowish-brown to light brown to a dark brown. Black blotch on cheek which is thinly bordered by a yellowish-white. White spots on head and front of body. Row of darker bars along body separated by a narrower paler colour. Row of black blotches along midflank and upper body. Pale wavy lines on upper body. Dorsal fin with colours and pattern of body. First dorsal fin spine with 2 black blotches separated by orange/white which bleeds onto the fin behind. Pelvic fins a bluish-green.
Males: lower jaw dark.
Females: lower jaw with thin dark brown bands.

Size:

Reaches 7.0 cm.

Habitat:

Found in holes in rocks and sunken wood and in sandy areas with vegetation.
