Simple nasal and orbital cirri. Orbital cirri long and thick. Front of dorsal fin elevated but circular.
Iris red, orange, pink or black - lighter individuals with pink/orange and darker ones with red/black. Colour highly variable, ranges from light brown to black. Front half of body solid but rapidly cuts off to be translucent. Pattern variable. Often with a white triangular stripe behind eye, alongside white spots on lower and upper head and front of body. Can have multiple rows of brown spots along body. Upper front body with white blotches. Dorsal fin often black with a small yellow/orange triangular blotch on the lower front. Can also have vertically alternating rows of brown and white spots.
Reaches 2.1 cm.
Found in holes in sandy bottoms with rubble at bases of drop-offs or groove and spur formations.
