Distinctive features:

  1. No orbital cirri.
  2. Thick red vertebral column with yellow dashes.
  3. White iris with diagonal black line through pupil.
  4. Breeding males with red banner with lower white margin.

Physical description:

Simple nasal cirri. No orbital cirri.

Colouration:

Females and immature males: pinkish head and transparent body. Thick red/brown stripe along midlfank from back of eye to caudal base with an upper yellow stripes and white dashes. Iris white with a black diagonal line through the pupil. Red belly with yellow blotches. Front of dorsal fin white with faint orange banner and white margin.
Breeding males: black head, iris and front of body. Spiny dorsal black with red banner bordered by white below.

Size:

Reaches 3.8 cm.

Habitat:

Found on rocky and coral reefs. Breeding males found in holes.
