Distinctive features:

  1. Orbital cirri present.
  2. Breeding males with triangular shaped dorsal fin with red banner.

Physical description:

Simple nasal and orbital cirri.
Males: front dorsal fin elevated in a triangular shape.
Females: first few spines greatly elevated.

Colouration:


Females: largely transparent wutg red vertebral column with white dashes. Head red, darker on rear cheek. Dark red spots which can merge into stripes. Can have a white stripe behind eye but not always present. Membrane between first few dorsal spines white with mottled brown stripes.
Breeding males: black head and body. Front dorsal fin black with red/orange banner bordered by a white margin below. Pelvic fins orange/red.

Size:

Reaches 3.6 cm.

Habitat:

Found on corals. Breeding males found in holes.
