Species infomation

Distinctive features:

  1. Males with yellow-green cirri.
  2. Males with red front of black head.
  3. Females with a brown head with white lower head.
  4. Females with black blotch on opercle edge.

Physical description:

Simple eye and nasal cirri.
Males: orbital cirri longer than diameter of eye.
Females: orbital cirri short.

Colouration:

Males: black head which fades to a greyish-brown. Red front of face. Yellow-green orbital cirri. Black ocellus on front of dorsal fin.
Young males: greenish head with 2 white stripes below eye separated by black.
Females: orbital cirri white. Very translucent - brown head with a large white stripe from behind eye taking up the entire lower head. Green flecks on upper head. Black blotches on lower head. Vetebral column brown with white dashes. Brown saddles on upper body which become shorter posteriorly. A large white blotches behind head and 2 behind pectoral fin. Black blotch in front of pectoral fin base and on opercle edge.

Size:

Reaches 3.5 cm.

Habitat:

Found in empty barnacles on rocky reefs.
