Species infomation

Distinctive features:

  1. White flattened cirri.
  2. Head with heavy white spotting.
  3. White blotch on bottom of iris.
  4. Males with a long 'spike' in the front of the dorsal fin.

Physical description:

Simple nasal cirri. Orbital cirri flattened with small branches on one plane.
Males: dorsal fin spine III twice as long as next spines.
Females: dorsal fin spines I-III slightly taller.

Colouration:

Body translucent after head. Vertebral column solid in colour with white dashes. Upper and lower body with small black blotches and white lines and spots. Iris with white blotch on bottom. Cirri white. All fins with sporadic white blotches throughout.
Males: light green to black head. White patterns of head which look like odd lines and dots. Front of dorsal fin a mix between black, green and white.
Females: green/brown on upper head and white below. Green/brown on body. Thick white stripe from cheek to opercle edge. Translucent lips and below white stripe. Front of dorsal fin (spines I-III) white with a blue ocellus.

Size:

Reaches 3.5 cm.

Habitat:

Found in empty holes in rocky reefs.
